WHERE I'M FROM

We're all Frons whether by blood, marriage, or friendship, but that little bit of our other family lines keeps us all quite unique. In the words of George Ella Lyons, please feel free to share where you are from and we'll be happy to publish it with credit on the FFa site.

Where I'm From
Christine Fron, 18 March 2006

I am from monkey blood and Band Aids from Medic and Grandpa, and still Daddy's girl.

I am from the white clapboard farmhouses with bubbling fish ponds where the grass whispers at night, and from the velvety sands on the back forty of a sprawling metropolis.

I am from the scrub oak of Texas no higher than a fencepost, in a one-horse town, and from the swaying palms towering over a concrete jungle.

I am from Sunday supper at noon and an honest living, from Iwan and Oleksandra of barbed wire, bad English, buckets of love, and tight braids, from Mike and Artie of fresh pigskins, bushels of beets, and dogs who danced to a well-tuned fiddle every Saturday night, from Herman and Luba of one land to another, divided we fall, and from green cards, dp camps and genocides, I'm from lucky to be here, at all.

I am from virtue of heart, from sweat and song, from waves and washboards, from snuff and spittoons, and from strength of the ancestral Amazons.

I'm from the devil himself, my grandaddy swore, and from could do no wrong, I'm from the middle, as such the firstborne and much prettier, he said, too.

I am from old country heathens and north Texan Baptists, from Greek Orthodox peasants, and from sabbaths with prayers mostly unspoken and faithful events, another day spent.

I'm from the Eurasian Steppes and all that it sows, from a dry Texas oilrig and my Daddy who was born in an old buzzard's nest, high with immigrant Poles, from smokehouse Angus with whole garlic cloves, and from babka on rushnyks.

I am from penny candy right out of the jar, from ballroom facades of an era no more, from proud Irish- Apache and Confederate soldier's black powder affairs, from shotgun weddings making literary press, and from corporate highrises overlooking the beach, from immigrant to corporate, and from farmers and soldiers back to soldiers and farmers, and most of all, I am from the stolen moments of bareback and barefoot rides on a 16-hand Appy in thick summer heat by a cold watering hole, and from the serenity of the Pacific surf pounding the shorelines.

I am from more than little bit else of the memories now buried in ruins of rambledown shacks and overpriced homes, and from family antiques holding much southern moxy. I am from bygones of journeys too soon forgotten by some careless heirs. --© 2006-2007 Christine Fron, 18 March 2006
